Places to Eat Alone in Melbourne CBD: Solo Dining at the Counter

A counter is the best place in a city to eat alone, and an omakase counter is the best kind of counter. Nobody is waiting for you to order, the chef talks to the whole room, and the person next to you is as likely to be solo as not. At Rōnin, single seats are booked online like any other.

This page is for anyone searching for somewhere to eat alone in the CBD that feels like an evening rather than a meal.

WHY IT WORKS

Ten Seats, One Conversation

Ten people share one sitting and one chef. The courses arrive together, the chef introduces each one, and the conversation runs along the counter rather than across tables. Eating alone here is closer to joining a dinner than to sitting by yourself. Why only ten seats explains the room.

BOOKING ONE

How to Reserve a Single Seat

Online bookings on OpenTable accept parties from one. Seats for the next month open on the 20th of each month at 8pm; a single seat is easier to find than a pair, including on Fridays and Saturdays, and midweek is easier still.

THE NIGHT

What Arrives

About ten Korean courses over roughly two hours, decided on the day by Chef Liam Lee: banchan, jang seasoned raw and cured dishes, charcoal, noodles or rice, dessert. What to expect if it is your first omakase is written for exactly this visit.

TRAVELLING

Visiting Melbourne Alone

Rōnin is a few minutes on foot from Southern Cross and Flagstaff stations and the Collins Street hotels. Directions are on the location page. A sitting runs about two hours.

PRACTICAL

Price and Limits

A$195 (no prepayment required), paid at the end of the meal. No dietary alterations, no BYO, dinner only Wednesday to Saturday.

QUESTIONS

FAQ

Can I book a single seat at Rōnin?
Yes. Online bookings accept a party of one.

Will I feel out of place dining alone?
No. The counter format means every guest faces the chef and shares the same sitting. Solo guests are common.

Is it quiet enough to read or work?
It is a chef’s counter, not a cafe. The chef talks, the room talks. Come for the dinner.

Can I sit at the end of the counter?
Add a note to the booking and we will do what the night allows.

What are the best places to eat alone in Melbourne CBD?
For the best solo dining in Melbourne CBD, pick a counter or a bar, where nobody faces an empty chair. Rōnin takes single bookings at its ten seat counter.
