Dinner Near Southern Cross Station: A 10 Seat Omakase Eight Minutes Away
Southern Cross is where interstate trains, the SkyBus from the airport and the regional lines arrive, and the question of where to eat within walking distance comes up constantly. Rōnin is eight minutes east along Little Collins Street, which puts a chef’s counter within reach of a 5.30pm arrival.
Rōnin is a ten seat Korean omakase at 445 Little Collins St in the CBD: about ten courses decided on the day by Chef Liam Lee, A$195 per guest (no prepayment required) paid at the end of the meal, Wednesday to Saturday from 6pm, dinner only, no dietary alterations, no BYO.
From the Platform to the Counter
Leave Southern Cross by the Collins Street exit, walk east along Collins or Little Collins past Spencer, King and William Streets, and Rōnin is at 445 Little Collins between William and Queen, on the north side. About eight minutes at an ordinary pace. The Collins Street trams in the Free Tram Zone cover the same distance in two stops. The location page has Flagstaff and Flinders Street directions too.
Making a 6pm Sitting
Sittings start from 6pm Wednesday to Saturday and begin within fifteen minutes of the booked time, so a train arriving by 5.40pm works and one arriving at 6.10pm does not. If your arrival is uncertain, remember that cancellations are free only more than 72 hours ahead.
Practical Notes
A ten seat counter has no cloakroom for suitcases, so drop bags at your hotel first. The Rialto, the Collins Street and Flinders Lane hotels are all within a few minutes of the restaurant; Southern Cross itself has luggage storage for travellers passing through.
The Omakase
About ten Korean courses over two hours at a counter facing the chef, A$195 (no prepayment required) paid after dinner, no menu to read after a long trip. What to expect if it is your first.
